Thursday 16th - bike **** - Long Two Rivers – Deben to the Orwell –
Mainly cloudy.
Sad times in Suffolk as work starts to demolish the Lighthouse on Orford
Island before it is claimed by coastal erosion! I have windsurfed there
from The Dip, Felixstowe several times and was keen to foil there today
with the wind in an ideal direction, NW but sadly it was not quite strong
enough to risk the trip. So after doing my exercises in the garden and
despite the cloudy weather we decided to pack our lunch to head out on our
bikes with my big lens fitted to see the lighthouse for one last time!
Leaving home at 12.30 we headed down to the prom turning left to The
Fludgers but not getting our first views of the lighthouse, ten miles away
until we nearly reached the Dip. On looking through my camera we discovered
the lighthouse was still standing despite being over shadowed by a large
crane standing to its left! Then down to Felixstowe Ferry and out onto the
River Deben path, our original plan was to have lunch with ‘Emily’ at
Falkenham Church but decided to stop on one of the fishing platforms at
Kings Fleet to watch the dragon fly’s. We were not disappointed as there
were loads of large ones hovering in front of checking us out! We enjoyed
our cheese sandwich nearly as much as the small fish we were feeding! After
a relaxing lunch we continue to Candlet Lane where Mag heads for home while
I turn right to Trimley, down through the docks to the viewing point. I
stop there for a bit to watch the foot ferry land before continuing home
along the prom, the beach area is quite busy despite the cloudy day! So, a
nice 17-mile ride being out for 3.5 hrs and fingers crossed the sun returns
tomorrow but the light winds seem here to stay for a few days.
PS – just had some bad news, windsurfing mate Neil Hurrell out for the
first time on his brand new foil board and Slingshot foil at Alton water
when lost his foil when apparently the bolts sheared off !!! I just can’t
believe it as I have hit the bottom hard several times with no problems,
just very unlucky I suppose!!! I wish him good luck in finding the foil. It
as made me think as I have loads of long-distance foiling adventures
planned for the coming weeks, I have always leashed my foil to my old board
and will have to now do the same with my new board!
